BCAA הוא תוסף של שלוש חומצות האמינו חיוניות מסועפות שרשרת – ואלין, לאוצין ואיזו לאוצין, אשר גוף האדם אינו יודע לייצר לבד ולכן יש לצרוך אותן באמצעות תזונה.
חומצות אמינו אלו נמצאות בריכוז גבוה בשרירים ומשמשות כמעין "חומר דלק" לפעילותם וגם מעודדות סינתזה של חלבון המביאה להתאוששות מהירה יותר של רקמת השריר לאחר מאמץ ממושך.
